| Resource: Direct Instruction And Its Implementation In The Classroom (paper) | ||
| Comments: This is a research paper on the use of Direct Instruction. The paper examines where DI came from and how it has evolved over the years. The paper also give some very practical steps to take to implement DI. The paper is a great resource for new teachers that are just beginning to teach in a classroom. | ||

| Comments: At the beginning of each year, I teach my students how to make origami. I do this to teach them about following instruction and paying attention. The first thing I do is show students a piece of origami. I like to use a fish. Then I hand every student a square sheet of origami paper and ask them to replicate the fish. After about 5 minutes of letting the students struggle to make origami, I have them hand in their mangled sheets of paper. Next, I hand them new sheets of paper and instructions about how to make the origami. After each student has instructions, I demonstrate for them each step until they end up with a finished, folded fish. After we are finished, I will discuss with the students the importance of following instructions and paying attention. The application for students is very easy to see, for they have just tried to accomplish something without instructions or paying attention and then failed, and then they have followed instructions and paid attention and succeeded in making a fish. |
