Psalm 58

Have you ever asked the question, “what is the purpose in all of this Christianity stuff?” Well, you’re not alone. It is always difficult to work day in and day out for a reward that we may never see in this life. It is much easier to do that which is wrong yet immediately gratifying and expedient and see immediate rewards. David felt the same thing as he wrote this Psalm.

He knew that his God was real and that his reward was real, but like the mockers of Noah, his enemies simply could not see the truth of what David believed. His enemies were blinded to godly truths. It is always difficult to hold fast to our beliefs when there are only a few that believe them. We may begin to wonder if our beliefs are really the right beliefs. But remember what Christ said in the New Testament that the road to Hell is broad but the road to God is narrow and few there are that find it.

While we live on this earth and in this time we may never see the full blessing of our trust in God, but we can rest assured that the Almighty of the universe has us in his hand. The blessings that accompany knowing him will, even if only in eternity, far outweigh the blessing of immediate pleasure now.

The concept that students and teachers can learn from David here is self-control. When a person gives in to temporary pleasure there is a lack of self-control. When we restrain ourselves we begin to develop self-control. Most people can tell you from life experience that those people that do not have good self-control never really amount to anything in life but a headache.
