Psalm 57
We looked at the first three verses of chapter 57 yesterday. Today I would like to examine verse 7 which states, “My heart is fixed, O God, my heart is fixed: I will sing and give praise.” Remember David was hiding in a cave from King Saul.
David reminds the reader that even though his current circumstance is less than enviable that he determined in his heart long before he found himself in this situation that he would not be moved. He did not give in to fear, he did not change his beliefs to fit King Saul’s. He did not abandon his country. He hid himself wisely to avoid harm, but he did not abandon the people he would eventually serve as king. He did none of these things because he has already fixed his heart on God’s will.
When we find ourselves in difficult circumstances it can often be easy to give in to pressure and do something that is not right because someone else is trying to persuade us to do so. Administrator can find themselves in this predicament. When parents want special favors, it can be difficult to stand for what is right because it may mean a loss of a few thousand dollars in tuition. However, David’s life teaches us that pragmatic decisions never win in the long run, only being “fixed” on the principles that God has outlined in His Word can sustain a godly ministry.
This is a valuable lesson to teach students also. They
constantly face peer pressure from other ungodly students. They need to be
taught about the successful results that David experienced because he stayed “fixed”
