Psalm 64

In this chapter, David talks to God about his plight. There are people that he knows are devising evil for him and he does not know how to deal with. David knows that people are gossiping about him, trying to make him look bad in others’ eyes.

There are two lessons here. First, we need to be careful that we do not become one of those people that talk behind closed doors about other people. Often when we gossip we talk about other people from a half-knowledge of a situation. If we would simply go straight to that person the problem would probably not even exist. But we are so full of pride many times that we are fearful of going to that person. Because then we may find out that we were wrong in gossiping. Gossip is easy to do, especially when we are already drained from the day or tired. I was once told by a wise person to try to never make a decision while I was tired, because we are weak then. It is easier for us to succumb to assumptions.

Second, if we find ourselves on the other end of the gossip chain, we need to remember that the only one that counts knows who is right. Verse 10 says that the righteous are glad in the LORD. They are not glad because people believe that they are bad people or even that people think that they are good people. No, the righteous are glad because God is on their side.
